Contraceptive Coil – An Effective and Long-term Protection against Pregnancy

contraceptive coil

Did you know that there are more contraceptive options other than condoms and the pill? Most probably, you did not. Several gynecology clinics are providing a comprehensive range of contraception advice and care. Your private GP will help you choose from almost 15 types of contraception. These include injections, contraceptive pills, the long-lasting contraceptive coil in implants. In this blog, we will discuss the most effective type, that is, a contraceptive coil. Read on to know if it is right for you and how efficient is the technique.

The contraceptive coil

Usually, the contraceptive coil is of two types – a hormonal intrauterine system (IUS) and copper-based intrauterine device (IUD). The coils are fitted inside the uterus to ensure effective and long-term protection. You can avoid pregnancy for 5-10 years if the process of coil fitting is implemented properly.

From now on. You don’t need to think about precautions or get worried about unwanted pregnancy while having sex. Unlike pills and condoms, you need not remember using it every time you make love with your partner. Ask your gynecologist to avail contraceptive coil for long-term protection. However, it won’t protect you from STDs and other sexual health problems or infections.

The distinction between IUS and IUD

When you visit a gynecological clinic for coil fitting, make sure you know the difference between both the types. The hormonal intrauterine system (IUS) is a small-sized plastic device that initiates the gradual release of the hormone progesterone. This hormonal secretion turns your womb lining thinner, thus, preventing it from accepting a fertilized egg. To the contrary, intrauterine device (IUD) is a small-sized copper-based plastic device that does not involve any hormonal secretion. To cut it short, the copper in the device restricts the sustenance of sperm in the womb and fallopian tube.

Some more details – Is it sore?

The names of the coils might sound kind of equipment, but fortunately, they are not at all dangerous. Although, you might feel some pain when your gynecologist fits the coil inside the uterus, yet, it is completely safe. You can have a painkiller before the treatment process or ask your doctor for a local anesthetic in case you feel uncomfortable with the insertion.

It takes only 15-20 minutes to get the coil fitted into the uterus and prior to the fitting process, you will be examined internally by the concerned therapist. On completion of the procedure, there are chances of experiencing cramps and slight bleeding which will ease out with paracetamol.

Possible disadvantages of having a contraception coil

Like it is said, nothing is totally perfect and there are some complications associated with the kind of contraception. Women taking IUD or IUS may experience heavy and longer periods and may also suffer from pelvic infections.

But, most of the women choosing an IUS oil won’t get painful cramps and will have controlled bleeding. This is because of the thickening of womb lining with the hormonal secretion. If you go for IUS at the gynae center, you may have headaches, breast tenderness, acne in the initial days.

So, the next time you want to have long-term precaution for pregnancy, visit a gynecological center for a perfect and effective solution with contraception coil.
