Health care administration is a specialized field relating to the management, leadership, and administration of the public health care systems in all hospital networks in the economy. An effective health care administration works wonders to the public health systems in primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy. Because a country’s economic success is dependant on its workforce. If the people are sick and not treated well by the hospitals in time, then they are either going to die or remain unwell to go back to work. Hence, a country’s workforce will decline, creating a burden on the economy.

Now let us look at how the hospitals are run. According to most people, doctors run the hospital, but that is a misconception. In reality, hospitals are the product of an effective administration that is dedicated enough to elevate healthcare standards. Healthcare administrators are the ones who make sure that hospitals and healthcare platforms maintain their medical standards and quality of care. 

 Opting for executive masters in healthcare administration is a highly coveted program that will secure your career and will put you in a position of authority. 

Following are the details about health care administration that you need to know before opting it as a career:

  1. Accounts and Budget

Like every other business in the world, hospitals are just as dependent on the money and funding to keep them running efficiently and provide the required treatments to the patients.

Even before the doctors, what’s needed by the people planning to start a hospital is an administrator good enough to allocate their investments and draft out a budget for them. That is the basic foundation that can then be followed with little to no changes towards making a hospital. It doesn’t end there since once your hospital is in the running, your administrator needs to manage accounts with a margin of risk to ensure that the hospital runs smoothly.

Besides this, your administrator is simultaneously working on getting you more funding via charitable trusts and donors. In short, healthcare administration can be easily referred to as the backbone of any hospital.

2. Doctors

Believe it or not, but to healthcare administrators, good doctors are like a commodity. Like every brand needs a face to draw attention towards it, similarly, the hospitals need reputable doctors to draw patients. Better salary packages and added benefits are what generally determines if a doctor is willing to get on board and work with you.

This cherry-picking from the cream of doctors is again the job of a healthcare administrator. Since they are in charge and know how much the hospital can spend on a doctor while sustaining itself. The nature of this task seems simple. Make a good offer, wait for it to be accepted, get a highly qualified doctor on board and start making people better. 

Additionally, a hospital has more than a dozen departments, all handled by your healthcare administrators. Although they might not all be related to doctors, most of them are. Hunting and bidding on at least a dozen doctors are what’s done to get one or two of your choice. Secondly, the budget restrictions cuff your hands from picking what you want. It’s as easy as saying that you can’t buy that toy because you can’t afford it. Mostly, you will have to compromise and get along with what you have in hand. But that’s how hospitals are run since their primary business is healthcare.

3. Insurance Affiliations

Insurance is something that cushions you from the fear of not being able to tend to your medical needs while struggling to make your ends meet. Such insurance companies run by being in contract with hospitals. This again is something that your healthcare administrator is looking after.

To have the best, most easily accessible insurance company be working with your hospital is very important. A good name under your belt can easily increase the inflow of patients and make a direct impact on how much revenue is being generated by the hospital.  Also, patients visiting the hospital that is suggested by their insurance company pay less when getting a check-up. Besides, the hospital staff gets to enjoy added benefits by associating themselves with the insurance company working hand in hand with the hospital.

All this requires your healthcare admin not only to be capable to cash in on opportunities but also to be vigilant enough to turn every tide in the hospital’s favor. This is only possible when the person you have hired is not just good with numbers, but equally good with words. 

4. Joint Ventures/ Collaborations

There are a lot of hospitals competing for higher rankings and better standings to attract more patients and highly qualified doctors. But like every other business, you can’t attract attention unless you market yourself as highly advanced and superior as compared to the other hospitals in your area. This is yet another responsibility to be shouldered by the hospital’s healthcare administration.

There are a lot of ways to market the name of your hospital or healthcare organization. One could turn to overtake cases or surgeries that are already attracting media attention and use it to market their medical expertise. Another way is to associate yourself with progressing NGOs and medicinal companies to establish a relation of mutual benefit. NGOs can have donations coming in from patients visiting the hospital and hospitals can use free publicity from NGO campaigns. Similarly, patients suffering from chronic conditions appreciate medicinal companies. Collaborating with such companies may promote the hospital as well, leading to improve the hospital’s image.

Hence, looking favorably upon joint ventures and collaborations and assessing what’s best for the hospital is what elevates the standard of your healthcare administration.

5. Research and Development

Advancement in medical science and technology has led to the discovery of numerous new, incurable diseases. These breakthroughs in medical science are helping patients with such incurable illnesses. Hence, making research and development a very important aspect of the field of medical science.

Healthcare administrations need to research unique ideas and ways to find a cure. Latching on to the research into rare diseases may get you a lot of public and media attention. Also, some organizations are willing to fund promising research so that they can claim a share if the program turns out to be successful. This works in the mutual interest of the investor and the hospital.

6. Leadership

The most significant and distinguishing aspect of this work area is leadership. If the administration is not led well, the organization can soon find itself declining. An authoritarian approach is never the solution to a situation and words can prove to be your best friends. An individual who acknowledges this and has a direction is the best fit for the job.

Educating yourself in this field and carrying it out efficiently is not everyone’s cup of tea. Some facilities would make the job of hospital staff easier, but can it be afforded is the real question. Pursuing every desire and exercising extravagance if you have a decent budget is not the way to go about things. Similarly, you don’t need to have the best of everything. You can balance whatever the hospital or healthcare organization is lacking by having one or two credible names on your banner. Also, pleasing everyone is not your job, getting the work done is. You may have to act as the bad guy, but you can have a clear conscience knowing that you have your reasons.

This bunched together with a lot of other responsibilities and workload is what relies on your hospital’s administration. In a nutshell, you need someone with extraordinary leadership skills as an administrator to establish a strong empire.


In simple words, a good healthcare administration is the backbone of any progressing hospital or healthcare organization with excellent communication skills, positive attitude, problem handling, and good leadership. However, this is not everyone’s specialty. Make it a subject worth looking into and learning more about if you plan to make a career choice. Hopefully, with the above information, you can easily decide if you have to make health administration as your career choice.
