With changing seasons, the weather affects our teeth due to the outside temperature variations. As winter sets in, the problems of teeth sensitivity is not far away. You should maintain proper oral hygiene to avoid oral problems in the freezing weather conditions. It can cause sharp, discomforting pain in your teeth and gums and may even lead to various other dental issues. Continue reading to know some of the dental health tips to follow this winter.

  • Pay regular dental visits: Although it’s chilling cold outside, you should take the pain to visit your dental professional for regular check-ups. This will help you stay updated on your current oral health. If you have weak or worn enamel, you are likely to suffer from sensitivity problems. Visiting your dentist might help detect the problem before it gets serious. You can also avail treatment for other issues like gum disease, tooth decay, bad breath, etc.
  • Some common reasons behind cold sensitivity include hard brushing, infection, gum recession, teeth grinding, jaw clenching and gingivitis. If you are in habit of doing any of these activities, go to your dental hygienist to have improved oral health.
  • Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: You will have to check your oral hygiene and include some more steps to ensure better results. Do not forget to brush your teeth after meals, and do floss them once in a day. If the pain is not relieved, perhaps, its time to change the toothpaste. Use a potassium-based desensitizing toothpaste to reduce sharp pain due to sensitivity. Start using it even before a month, to avoid facing the painful situation in winter. You can also buy a calcium-based toothpaste for quick relief, as it fills the open pores of tooth calcium. The most important, make sure you use a soft bristle toothbrush and replace it every three months.
  • Increase water intake: It is very important to stay hydrated to keep away from health issues, bith oral and overall. You should never forget to maintain a water intake of at least 2 liters every day. It keeps your teeth and gums moist. Water increases saliva production, thus, does not let your mouth dry up in cold weather. It will decrease the growth of bacteria which ultimately checks tooth decay. Instead of consuming acidic drinks and sweetened beverages, take water to avoid high sensitivity in winter.

Along with the above-mentioned tips, also make sure that you do not stay out for long in winters. The freezing cold weather outside can increase sensitivity and cause intolerable pain in your teeth and gums. For more severe cases, it is advised to contact a preventive dentist to get proper oral care treatment.
