Did you know that human error is the cause of close to 90% of all highway collisions?
The production of self-driving cars may be a way to address the number of accidents that occur every year on U.S. highways. It’s a way to decrease the annual number of accidents on the roads.
Most autonomous vehicles on the road today are in limited pilot programs. They are in the stages of testing their ability to navigate driving environments in the real world.
The Cities Where Autonomous Vehicles Could Be the Best Option
Which cities are leading the charge in autonomous vehicle technology? Keep reading to find out!
Las Vegas
Looking for a Lyft? The company employs 30 autonomous cars in the city of Las Vegas. They rolled out their autonomous cars during the Consumer Electronics Show in January of 2018.
You’ll find the cars travelling around the city 20 hours a day, seven days a week. The vehicles are autonomous but do have two people in the car, one behind the wheel and one in the passenger seat.
Pittsburg
Three different companies are testing their autonomous cars in the “Steel City.” In conjunction with a company called Argo AI, Ford is one of the companies putting their cars on Pittsburg roads. Aptiv is another and the third is a company called Aurora.
Amazon is an investor in Aurora and they’re working with Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Byton on developing their own self-driving technology. You’ll find self-driving VW e-Golfs and Lincoln MKZs are on the streets in Pittsburg with two people on board to act as operators.
Phoenix
A company called Waymo began testing autonomous vehicles in a testing facility near Phoenix back in 2016 as a part of Google’s self-driving car project.
Now they’re testing their vehicles in and around Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert. Waymo dreams of making cities move entirely by autonomous vehicles and are working towards that goal.
Four years in the making is Phoenix’s semi-public ride-hailing service. If you live in the East Valley area of Phoenix, you can hail a driverless robo-taxi to get where you need to go.
San Francisco
Companies like Uber and Cruise are testing their AVs on the streets of San Francisco. It’s a great city to help companies learn more to further their self-driving technology. It’s a complex city that’s ever-changing which helps them adjust and advance their vehicles.
Still at the Start
We are still years away from fully autonomous vehicles safely navigating all public roads. Researchers and manufacturers are working to solve the challenges they’re facing. Visit cyngn.com to learn about the three main problems that AV technology researchers are still trying to solve for fully autonomous vehicles.
Autonomous Vehicle Technology
Now that you know which cities are using autonomous vehicle technology, you’ll notice that one thing they have in common. This technology matters most in the places where people use public transportation the least. Autonomous vehicles offer people a great way to go long distances in comfort and without the stress of driving.
