What to Know

  • Different Types of Windows For Homeowners
    • Mechanical Types of Windows
    • Picture Windows
    • Bay Windows
    • Sliding Windows
    • Look for Cost and Appeal

The average window replacement costs at least $500. If you’re shelling out that kind of money, you’ll want to make sure that you get a window you like.

Finding the right style can prove difficult, though. Do you live somewhere which has frequent inclement weather, where the seal needs to be as tight as possible? Maybe you need a window that doesn’t interrupt the beautiful view.

No matter what option you pick, though, choosing the right types of windows for each room in your home will add aesthetic and functional appeal. In this article, we’ll go over your options for residential windows.

Different Types of Windows For Homeowners

Mechanical Types of Windows

Some windows have lots of mechanical parts. These include awning windows and casement windows. Both of these types of windows open and close easily while still offering good security.

An awning window opens outward with the pane angled down, creating an effect similar to an awning. Casement windows use a crank to open outward.

Windows with lots of mechanical elements have a few downsides, however. The mechanical parts themselves can fail, which can turn into a difficult and somewhat expensive fix. They also suffer if exposed to the elements, which can make for a quick trip to the glass shop.

Both of these types of windows open outward. As a result, they’re poor fits for cases with exterior obstructions like trees or other housing units.

Picture Windows

Picture windows dispense with hinges and locks in favor of a beautiful view. If you have a scenic overlook outside your house, picture windows can add a lot to the value and appeal of your home.

As a window replacement for most other types of windows, however, picture windows raise logistical concerns. While beautiful, they provide no airflow and can let in a lot of sunlight. This can make regulating your home’s temperature difficult.

Bay Windows

Bay windows create a shelf or bay by protruding out from the house. Bay windows require a major remodel, as they require new construction rather than a simple swap.

Most bay window arrangements have a picture window in the center and a pair of other window types on either side. This allows the benefits of a picture window while still allowing the improved airflow people want from home windows.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows use a simple horizontal groove to allow the window to open. They don’t always offer great curb appeal, but they’re cheaper and simpler than a lot of other options. They don’t need mechanical parts other than a lock.

If you’re choosing a patio door and windows, you can match the sliding windows to the patio door. Sliding patio doors are very similar to sliding windows, making it easy to create a unified aesthetic.

Look for Cost and Appeal

Sorting out the various types of windows often requires compromises between expense and appeal. Bay windows look great, but are you willing to commit to a remodel that could cost several thousand dollars? Will it hurt the value of your home to pick a window with low curb appeal?
